Chapter 16

Meghan

I pressed send on the email I'd typed out when the hotel door swung open. I leaned over the chair's arm, eager for a glimpse of Logan. It seemed like days since I'd last seen him instead of an hour and a half ago. I’d been checking the time. Constantly. Finally, he was back. Should I go to him? Would that seem too eager?

While debating all this, Logan walked into the living area and sucked all the oxygen out of the room. My phone hung limply in my grasp as I stared at the muscle tee clinging to his broad chest. I swallowed, my gaze traveling over the hard planes of his thighs, calves, and taut ass, then coming back up. How his hair stayed perfect despite a gym session was beyond me, but I wasn’t complaining.

He stayed silent as he dropped into a chair and unlaced his sneakers. He probably assumed I was still working on my emails. They’d taken me five minutes to go through, then I took a bath, changed into an oversized T-shirt and shorts, then curled up on the couch, waiting for him to get back.

I dropped my phone and sat cross-legged. “Hey.”

He grunted a reply I couldn't make out since he was still so bent on untying those damn laces.

“How did your gym session go?” I had the perfect innuendo that'd make him get all worked up so we could skip to the part where I’d join him in the shower.

“Fine.” He still hadn't looked at me.

I frowned for a second but quickly smiled. “So, need someone to scrub your back?” Weak, I knew, but I was too giddy to think straight.

Logan's eyes came up to me then.

I sucked in a breath and held it.

His eyes skated over me, from my exposed thighs to my loose shirt, then up to my face. He lingered on my lips, eyes going half-lidded, then he blinked, and it was all gone. “I can manage just fine, thanks.”

I started to speak but stopped. What just happened? Was it the weak come-on? I could do better.

Logan took off his sneakers and socks, picked up his gym bag, and headed to the bedroom.

“Logan?”

He stopped but didn't turn.

“Is something wrong?”

He looked over his shoulder for a second, but that was enough. Nothing he said would undo the flat look in his eyes. "Nothing's wrong."

He disappeared into the room, shutting the door. Shutting me out.

I brought my knees up, rested my chin on them, and stared at the closed door. Something had happened in the hour and a half Logan was at the gym, and whatever it was shattered the connection between us. Was this the end?

The next time the room door opened, I smelled Logan before I saw him. Hell, I was trying my best to concentrate on texting Stacey, but when he walked into the living area, the fresh fragrance of soap on him, I looked. That was my biggest mistake. My resolve to ignore him crumbled, and I watched him.
